questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

do i need a jrp 7 days?

Do I need a JRP 7 days?

Hi here's my itinerary
Arrive Tokyo 27/3
Depart Tokyo 29/3 to Hakuba
Leave hakuba 2/4 travel to Nagoya
Leave Nagoya 4/4 travel to Kyoto
Depart Kyoto 6/4 travel to Osaka
Fly home from Osaka 7/4

We will just be over 7 day pass but thinking we could purchase a rail ticket from Kyoto- Osaka for the last part.
Is it worth buying the 7 day unlimited pass or individual tickets?
( we will need to use trains in and around Kyoto ) Many thanks

Unfortunately a 7 day pass does not pay off with your itinerary. But if you added a day trip, for example from Tokyo to Nikko or Kyoto to Himeji, then it would pay off.

Hi there,

For this itinerary I would also recommend buying normal tickets. Because normal tickets are below the price of a 7 day JR Pass. If you did make a return from Osaka - Tokyo, then a JR Pass would have been great though!

Tokyo - Hakuba ¥ 8,300
Hakuba - Nagoya ¥ 7,110
Nagoya - Kyoto ¥ 5,590

For a total of ¥ 21,000. (the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,100)

Hope this helps,

I'm.still confused as I bumped into a friend she said just one trip from Tokyo- nagano (bullet train) cost them 9000 yen each.
They purchased the tickets in Tokyo when they arrived.
They then caught the bus from nagano to Hakuba
We definitely want to ride the Bullet train are the prices you quoted include this?
Can we buy tickets before we arrive in Japan? Apart from the unlimited packages I can find anything to give me options to reserve train seats etc?
Many thanks
