I have already bought a 7 day pass. We need to get from Kansai Airport to Kyoto, where we will spend 5 days. We then go to Tokyo for 4 days and need to get to Narita for our home flight. We would like to use the Rail pass to explore areas around Kyoto/Osaka and Tokyo.
Can you advise if we should exchange the Rail Pass at the beginning of our trip or the end for the best value.

Hi there!

I don't think there is a big difference between using it on the first 7 or last 7 days.
Personally I would use it on the last 7 days. This because there is a very good deal avaliable to get from Kansai Airport to Kyoto. It is the Haruka + Icoca package you can use that the travel to Kyoto and use the first couple of days there to take it easy and recover from any JetLag you may have.

If you have time I would recommand visiting Hiroshima as a day trip from Kyoto! Personally I think that the peace museum is something everybody should see and you can combine with a visit to Miyajima. Of course it is a great excuse to get on the Shinkansen too!

Hope this helps,
Daniel
