travel on 7-dayJR pass from Osaka to Nagano

I will be leaving for Tokyo on 27 Mar and have just bought a 7-day JR pass for my itinerary as follows:

27 Mar - arrive Tokyo at 4.20 pm
28 Mar - Tokyo-Osaka (stay 4 nights in Osaka and plan to do a day trip to Kyoto, visiting Arashiyama, a day trip to Nara, a day's visit to USJ and spend the rest of the time in Osaka
1 Apr - Osaka-Nagano (stay 2 nights in ryokan in Yamanouchi and plan to visit Jigokudani Monkey Park and surrounding areas. Not sure if I would have time to do a day trip to Takayama and Shin-Hotaka robeway. Could you advise please?)
3 Apr - Nagano-Tokyo (stay 5 nights in Tokyo and plan to make day trip to Mt Fuji and Mishima Skywalk , possibly Gotemba, Mt Takao, Odaiba, etc)

Could you advise me if my 7-day JR pass works with this itinerary and would I have to incur any additional costs for my travels?

I checked HyperDia but do not quite understand some of the fees indicated for example travelling on the limited express Thunderbird 11 from Shin-Osaka via Kanazawa to Nagano, there is a fee of JPY7880. Do I need to pay this fee and what does it mean when "reserve" is stated?

Not sure if this is the best plan to include Nagano in my itinerary owing to the long travelling time and the number of transfers, or is it more ideal to spend the 2 nights (1-3 Apr) in some other places in the eastern part nearer to Osaka side. Need your expert advice on this.

Please also tell me what attire would I need to wear at this time of the year? Do I need winter clothings for Shin-Hotaka robeway and Mt Fuji?

Thank you for your help.

Hi there,

A 7 day JR Pass would help you make savings if you plan for using it from Tokyo - Osaka - Nagano and the day trips. Travel between all of the above cities is covered but additional fares are required between Nagano - Yamanouchi.

In Hyperdia, always look at the Total. This is the price you would pay without a JR Pass.

For Nagano, you can certainly plan it in and its not that much added travel time. However I don't think there is enough time to visit Takayama.

The higher up you go the colder it gets, still its been a relatively warm year so far. It may be smart of take one set of warm clothing with you.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you, Daniel-san.

You mentioned that there is an additional fee from Nagano to Yamanouchi. The ryokan that I will be staying at is Yudanaka Onsen. Could you let me know what is the additional fee and what is the best and most convenient way to travel between these places?

From Shinjuku to the Mt Fuji, Mishima, Gotemba area, what is the most convenient and inexpensive way to travel? Also within Tokyo.

Thank you.

Cheers!
Olivia

Hi Olivia,

Just use www.hyperdia.com and look for the route Nagano - Yudanaka. Here you will find all the details, the fee depends a little on what train type you wish to travel on. Its around 1,200yen.

You can also user hyperdia to find all the other routes, there are so many train services that the best route often depends on what time of day you travel.

Cheers!
Daniel
