Is JR Pass suitable for spontaneous trips?

Hi there,

In November I will be going to Japan for the very first time. I am probably going to purchase the 7 day pass for my girlfriend and myself, as it seems very cost friendly.

I know I want to go to lots of places, but havent decided exactly what the itinerary will be... would it still be wise to pick up the pass in this case?

I will be in Tokyo for 14 days, and definitely want to visit:
Hakodate (maybe since its very far)

1) If I just go to those places, even on multiple days, will it be worth it to get the pass?
2) Does the pass activate the 7 days from the moment i collect it at the airport, or rather from the first time i use a train?
3) How efficient would the pass be for just inner city travel (Tokyo) for 7 days?

Hi Kureshan,

Absolutely! The JR Pass is perfect for spontaneous trips as you can use any train you like without having to worry about ticket prices. Just a visit to Kyoto will pay for a 7 day JR Pass. Hakonedate is even further but you would make very nice savings over normal tickets with a 7 or even a 14 day JR Pass, as a one way ticket Tokyo - Hakodate alone is ¥ 19,900. You also get to ride the fastest bullet train in Japan if you do decide to make the trip.

2.) You can purchase the JR Pass directly from online. We will then ship a voucher to you, which can be exchanged in Japan for the actual JR Pass. You may do so at any time, for instance at Narita Airport or Tokyo station. At the time of exchange you can select the period when you wish to use the JR Pass, you don't have to start using it right away. Note that you can't buy the JR Pass when you are in Japan and have to place an order before you go.

3.) The JR Pass can be used to explore most of Tokyo. Local travel within Tokyo is not very expansive, so it's better to use the JR Pass for nationwide travel.

Hope this helps!
