Hi,

I need help in determining if I need to purchase Japan Rail Pass.

My itenary below:

10 May: Arrive in Narita, Tokyo
11 May: Mt Fuji Tour (transportation organised by local tour)
12 May: Disney Sea
13 May: Tokyo city tour (transportation organised by local tour)
14 May: Travel to Osaka and stay in Osaka
15 May: Kyoto sightseeing (transportation organised by local tour)
16 May: Universal Studio
17 May: Free day
18 May: Leave Japan through Osaka airport.

What's the best cost effective way to travel with my itenary?
In case, I don't need to purchase Japan Rail Pass? Can I still use the JR Train and pay on a trip to trip basis?
Is it better to use subway or JR Train to navigate ?
From airport to hotel, should I use subway or train?

Thanks

Hello there,

For this trip buying normal tickets will be a better option. This because normal tickets are below the price of a 7 day JR pass.

A JR Pass works great if you make a return Tokyo - Kyoto or Tokyo - Osaka using the Shinkansen. In your itinerary this is just a one way.

In terms of metro vs overground trains, it really depends where you have to go. Both systems work well and sometimes you even need both. Though I would take the Narita Express from Narita Airport to Tokyo if you wish the most comfort.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
