Hi there,
I’m planning to travel to Japan in January 2020. May you please advice me on the type of jr pass that I should purchase?
My itinerary will be Kansai airport-Osaka-Kyoto-Takayama-Shirakawago-Osaka.
We are traveling with 3 adults and 2 kids.
Also, to go around Osaka and Kyoto what pass should I use?
Thank you very much in advance.

Regards,
Rogina

Hi Rogina,

I reviewed your itinerary but could not really find a good pass that would help you make savings. I think buying normal tickets would be the best option here.

For local travel in Osaka/Kyoto, I recommend buying an ICOCA card.

Hope this helps :)

Hi there,

It depends where you accommodation is, what time you travel and so on. Generally, you can navigate quite easily using Google Maps on your smartphone.

You can indeed use ICOCA to Nara as well :)

Kind regards,
Daniel

Hi Rogina,

I have checked your new itinerary and my advice is still the same. Using normal tickets on this route would be the best efficient.

One option you could look at is the Takayama - Hokuriku Area Pass. It allows you to travel from Osaka to Shirakawa-go and Takayama but you'd have to travel via Kanazawa (instead of the usual route using the Tokaido Shinkansen via Nagoya).

Kind regards,
Daniel
