We’re staying in Kyoto for 5 days and during this time we’ll be visiting Nara, Osaka and Hiroshima so I gather a JR West pass would make financial sense. Can we use it on a direct Shinkansen from Kyoto to Hiroshima as it looks like it’s only valid from Shin-Osaka station? Also, we will only be arriving in Kyoto from Tokyo the day before we want to travel to Hiroshima- can we reserve seats on a Shinkansen ahead of activating our rail pass? I’m finding it very confusing so grateful for advice. Many thanks!

Hello there,

From Kyoto, you'd have to use a normal train to Shin-Osaka, then use the Shinkansen from there to Hiroshima. If timed correctly, this only adds 15 minutes.

Seats can be reserved in person, at any station, once you have activated your JR Pass.

Kind regards,
Daniel
