Our itinerary is as follows:
day 1: narito to tokyo
day 2: tokyo east side
day 3: day trip: nikko or kamakura or Nara
day 4: tokyo west side: Shibuyu and Harajuku
day 5: travel to kanazawa, overnight kanazawa
day 6: travel to kyoto, afternoon in kyoto
day 7: day trip: nara or Kurashiki
day 8: kyoto
day 9: kyoto or day trip
day 10: osaka on way to airport

how would we use JR pass trains to access these places? what day should we activate the 7 day pass?
leaving on Wednesday, so need to figure out if we should get a JR pass by Monday.

THANKS!!!
Ellen

Hi Ellen,

I would activate the JR Pass on Day 3 (so it would be valid until day 9). This is the period where you can make the best possible savings.

And a bit of general advice: For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
