Hello,

I was wondering what the best pass would be to buy in order to get from Tokyo to Hokkaido and continue to travel around the island?
My thought is to buy a return or one way ticket on the Shinkansen up to Hokkaido and from there use the Hokkaido pass?
Since I will not be staying in Tokyo I dont really want to purchase 2 different types of passes.
Thank you :)

Hi there,

It depends on where else in Hokkaido you travel. You have two main options 1.) Is using a JR Pass, that is valid nationwide, including all of Hokkaido. or 2.) Use a JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass. This pass covers the route up from Tokyo to Sapporo and everything in between. It does not cover the north side of Hokkaido, or north of Sapporo.

The JR Pass comes in 7, 14 and 21 consecutive days while the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass comes in a 6 day pass that can be used on selective days within a 14 day period.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
