Tokyo to Kagoshima

Hello,

I am travelling to Japan this August for a two week period. We are looking to visit Tokyo 5 days, Kyoto 2 -3 days, Fukuoka (2 days) and Kagoshima (2 days). We are trying to figure out the best itinerary for the trip.

We have family ties in both Fukuoka and Kagoshima so those are non-negotiable but we are having a hard time figuring out the best plan for when we go where. I should also note that if we get an extra day, we may stop in Hiroshima depending on timing and to break up more of the train ride.

Option 1: Fly into Tokyo and make our way down the island and back, leaving Tokyo at the end of the trip. This may give us extra time in Tokyo and surrounding area with more to see and do.

Option 2: Fly into Tokyo, spend our days there and then head to down the island with making a stop in either Fukuoka and Kyoto there and back to break up the train ride.

If anyone can share their experiences or suggestions, that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Hi there,

As your itinerary is still in the very early stages of planning, there's a lot you can do but it also makes it harder to give specific recommendations. To make a start, I'd recommend looking at the Shinkansen network in Japan, this is the backbone of rail travel and you can zip between cities. With a bit of planning and the right pacing, you could do all your travel by rail. For instance, Tokyo - Kyoto - Fukuoka - Kagoshima - Hiroshima - Tokyo would work well. You could even break it up a bit more by adding a stop in between Hiroshima - Tokyo.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
