Hi, I'm planning a two week JR Pass trip for May that involves a number of stops, and I have a couple of questions. Here is what I have outlined so far:

  • Stay 2 nights in Tokyo
  • Leave in the morning on bullet train to Toyama and then take the bus to Shirakawa-go. Explore for the afternoon and stay 1 night at a minshuku.
  • Take bus us to Takayama the next afternoon and stay for 1 night.
  • Train to Kyoto and stay 4 nights.
  • Train to Matsuyama and stay 3 nights.
  • Train to Hakone and stay 2 nights
  • Morning train to Narita airport

The biggest questions for me right now are:

  1. Do I have enough time to travel from Tokyo to Shirakawa-go and still explore the town in the afternoon?

  2. Is the train through Fukuyama the best way to get from Kyoto to Matsuyama and back to Hakone? Does taking the high speed ferry from Matsuyama to Hiroshima Shinkansen line save any time?

Thanks for any help!

Hi there,

1.) Yes, you will have enough time if you leave with an early train. You can see Shirakawa-go in about 3 hours and about 6 hours if you wish to take your time. I assume your Minshiku is there too?

2.) From Kyoto to Matsuyama, I would like the Shinkansen to Okayama and from there use a ltd. express to Matsuyama. The route is fully covered by the JR Pass, including the Shinkansen. The ferry to Hiroshima is faster but going there using the JR Pass by train would not cost you anything extra :)

Hope this helps,
Daniel
