Tokyo & Kyoto Itinerary + 7 Days JR Pass

Hello,

I will be in Japan for 18 days. Arriving at Haneda airport in the morning and leaving at Narita airport in the late afternoon. I will have a total of 16 free days to explore Japan. I would like to know what is the best decisions I should take for this.

I want to buy the 7 Days JR Pass. This will limit me to 5.5 or 6 days to explore Kyoto and its surrounded areas. The last day of the JR Pass I will use it to go from Kyoto to Tokyo to Narita airport. In total this give me 10.5 or 11 days in Tokyo and 5.5 or 6 days in Kyoto as I mentioned.

Is it a good or bad idea? Is there a better idea? I am thinking that I will have excessive days in Tokyo and too little time in Kyoto and its surrounded areas.

Should I buy the 14 Days JR Pass? Or is this a waste of money?

My itinerary will include day trips from Tokyo and Kyoto. Below you will see what I have in mind for my day-trips. I am open to to interchange or remove.

Tokyo: Mount Fuji and Nikko (or Kamakura).
Kyoto: Osaka, Nara, and probably Hiroshima.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Many of the questions you ask have a different answer, depending on your personal preferences, budget and wishes. What I can tell you is that a 14-day JR Pass would be cheaper than buying normal tickets if you do visit Tokyo, Nikko, Osaka, Nara and Hiroshima. The keyword here is "if". Similarly, if you have a budget to work with then a 7-day JR Pass might be a better option. Use it to cover the big intercity trips using the Shinkansen, like travel from Tokyo - Kyoto - Hiroshima - Osaka and back to Tokyo for some very good savings compared to buying normal tickets, although even Tokyo - Kyoto - Narita would pay for more than a 7-day JR Pass.

It comes down to budget vs flexibility in the end. My advice, for now, would be to settle on a final selection of cities that you will visit and then see what pass matches best.

Hope this helps :)
Daniel
