Hello,

A friend and I will be travelling through Japan in September.

We are planning to go from Tokyo to Jigokudani Monkey Park by catching the train to Nagano and then the Express bus.

We have now decided that after seeing the monkeys, we will stay in a ryokan in Yamanouchi for the night. Would it make more sense to instead catch a second train from Nagano to Yudanaka and drop off our luggage and then head to Jigokudani?

We would like to leave the following morning to Takayama but note that we will need to go from Yudanaka station (closest to Yamanouchi) to Takayama which is showing a very long travel time and lots of changes ( SHINSHUNAKANO, NAGANO and TOMOYA).

Is there a better/smarter option to do this route from Yudanaka?

Hi there,

It depends on how much luggage you have but getting to the Snow Money Park is a good hike. It may be better to leave your luggage at the station or drop it off somewhere before going to Jigokudani.

The route to Takayama is indeed via Nagano and Toyama, this is the best route. There's quite a few mountains in the way, that's why you have to make the transfers ;)

Kind regards,
Daniel
