Tokyo - Hakuba - Kyoto - Hiroshima - Kyoto - Osaka

My family and I will be travelling through Japan from February 4 until February 13 next year.

There are 4 adults and our baby who will be 11 months at time of travel.

We are leaving Tokyo on the 5th of Feb to Hakuba, what is the best way there using JR pass?

We are then leaving Hakuba on the 9th and going to Kyoto. Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

We want to do a day trip to Hiroshima (I have done this before many years ago!)

On the 12th we want to depart Kyoto to Osaka. We are then flying back to Tokyo before returning home to Australia.

If anyone has any tips for us with regards to trains/bus service to catch with this itinerary that would be fantastic! We will be carrying 1 x snowboard bag along with x 3 luggage. Will we need to book trains?

Many thanks!

Hi there,

There's one direct Azusa train service between Shinjuku - Hakuba every morning at 07:30. This is the easiest way to get there using the JR Pass if you can get on this train.

Hakuba - Kyoto is a bit more complicated: An example can be found here:

The rest of your trips are quite forward with direct trains between Kyoto - Osaka and Hiroshima.
Train reservations can generally be made on the day of travel, though I personally prefer to do so 1 day ahead of time to be secure of seating.

Hope this helps,
