Hi, Thank you for hosting this forum and answering my questions. It is very reassuring to have this resource to get clear and correct answers. I am traveling to Japan for the first time.

My itinerary
11-Apr Central Tokyo
16-Apr Urayasu Tokyo Bay
22-Apr Fujikawaguchiko (local line off of JR/Chuo/Ostuki)
25-Apr Mt Kaikoma (Ote, local line)
26-Apr Matsumoto
28-Apr Kanazawa
1-May Kyoto
4-May Osaka
8-May Tokyo
13-May Leave Tokyo

As you can see, I will spend a lot of time in Tokyo, and I will travel to a couple of locations that will require travel on local lines, not JR.

What JR rail pass would you recommend, and for how many days?

Hi there,

You'll save money if you purchase your tickets individually, specifically for your instance. You'll be staying in Japan for a long time and you won't be making very frequent train journey's in relation to the days you'll be staying, so it's a better option to individually book your tickets.

Since you are spending a lot of time in Tokyo, I would recommend purchasing a Suica prepaid card for use on the metro and bus network. Info on this can be found here.

Kind regards,

Alexis
