Hello,

My itinerary is a bit unique since my trip will start from osaka and end in osaka.

We're planning on going to the following places:

Osaka: Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, Shinsekai Neon Light, Osaka Castle
Shirakawa: Shirakawa go village
Kyoto: Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari, Gion
Hakone: Kawaguchiko Lake, Chureito Pagoda, Hakone Shrine
Tokyo: Shibuya Scramble, Odaiba, Ginza, Tokyo Tower , Harajuku (any other recommendation?)

and then from tokyo back to osaka since our return flight is from KIX.

Please advise whether we will need JR pass or not, and if we do, when do we activate it? since we've bought our flight tickets for 9 days in Japan, Rail Pass is only for 7 days and we're going from 29.3.2019(arrival in KIX at 3.25p.m. Japan Time) to 6.4.2019 (departure at 10.00p.m. Japan Time) (spring season) to view cherry blossoms.

  • we're considering on going to Mt.Koya/Wakayama. Do you recommend going to koya or shirakawa because shirakawa/Koya/Wakayama we only plan to do day trip. Or is it possible to slip in both or all of them?

Thank You very much

Hi there,

A 7 day JR Pass will be the best option as long as you can use it to return to Osaka before it expires. I would start using it on the day that you travel to Shirakawa-go. It is easier to go to Koya-san than Shirakawa-go from Osaka but both will take a good couple hours to reach. So I would limit myself to visiting one of them.

Other recommendations in Tokyo: Akiharabara (anime, games, tech). Shimokitazawa (Fashion, Youth culture), Imperial Palace & Gardens (close to Tokyo station), Edo-Tokyo Museum (History) and a side trip to Takao-san for a good hike.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
