Hello -

My son and I are planning to arrive in Tokyo/HND on May 19 then we want to go to Mt Fuji on May 22 - we will be staying in Yamanakako. Will we be able to use a Japan Rail Pass to get to this area near Mt. Fuji? Or what is the closest train stop near this area? If it is far away, would renting a car to drive to and back from Yamanakako be a good idea ?

After Mt. Fuji we plan to take the train to Kyoto on May 24 and then on to Kobe on May 25 and then fly home from Osaka/KIX. Will we be able to use the Rail Pass for all of these areas?

Thank you for your assistance -
Kathryn

Hi Kathryn,

There's not much JR travel around Fuji/Yamanako. Most transport is done by bus or private rail. That said, renting a car could be a good option too.

From there the JR Pass can be used for all your travel but I must say that it would cost less to buy just normal tickets on this route. A JR Pass would be good if you'd make a return to Tokyo after Osaka.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel -
Thank you for your response.
How/ where do I look up train times so we can plan better? And can we book and reserve seats in advance?
Want to leave Tokyo around 9:00 AM on May 22 to go towards Mt. Fuji.
What is the best station to get off and rent a car for driving to the Mt. Fuji area? Is it MISHIMA STATION?
We want to leave Mishima Station (if that is the best) at around 11:00 on May 24 and go to Kyoto
We want to leave Kyoto on May 25 at around 3:00 PM and arrive in Kobe
From Kobe to The Kansai Airport I see that there is a Ferry across to the airport.
Thanks again!
Kathryn

Hi again,

For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.

For the bus from Mishima see:

For renting a car, most Shinkansen stations have a JR-rent-a-car service. You could do so from Shinkansen station near Fuji, like Atami, Mishima, Odawara, Shin-Fuji or even Shizuoka.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
