Would you recommend a JR pass if we are spending a few days traveling from Matsumoto to Kyoto, around Kyoto and then back to Narita airport? We will be there 4 days total.

Let's have a look at the numbers and find out:
Matsumoto - Kyoto ¥ 9,660
Kyoto - Narita Airport ¥ 15,980
For a total of ¥ 25,640
The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. A JR Pass would be helpful if you added a little more travel. Such as Tokyo - Matsumoto?
