Japan 26 Days - should I get a rail pass? if so, what length and for what section of the trip?

Hi,
My itinerary is:
Day 1: Narita Airport - Tokyo
Day 3: Tokyo - Nikko
Day 6: Nikko - Tokyo
Day 7: Tokyo - Takayama
Day10: Takayama - Kanazawa
Day 14: Kanazawa - Kurashiki
Day 16: Kurashiki - Hiroshima
Day 20: Hiroshima - Tokyo
Day 26: Tokyo - Narita Airport
I will be travelling with someone with mobility issues and I will request station assistance for the travel as I have done in other countries. In providing advice though, can you take this into account [e.g. There is a direct train between destinations whereas JR rail pass usage would require train changes].

Hi there,

To start with a bit of general advice, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included. This way you can also find direct trains and such.

For assistance, this will have to be requested in advance but is freely offered. In addition you can always ask station staff in case of any needs.

given the itinerary do you think we should get a rail pass and if so for what period of time.

Hi again :)

I would take a 14 day Japan Rail Pass and use it from Day 6 to Day 20th, this would be a very cost efficient period to use the pass.
