I don't know if a jr pass is for us

Hi I hope someone can help me out. I am traveling to Japan from 16 April until 9 may with my wife and child of 2 years old.
The ticket for a 21 day jr pass is quite expensive, and I don't know if it is worth it for us.
A rough travel itinerary looks like so

3 days Tokyo
1 day Matsumoto
Do alpine route starting from Matsumoto
Stay 3 days in Kanazawa
3 days Nagoya
7 days Kyoto and go back and forth to Osaka and Nara
1 day hakone
5 days Tokyo

Is a 21 pass for me?

Additional question, my child sometimes gets tantrums. Normal as she is a child. But how do Japanese people look at these as we don't want to be disrespectful towards them. Also can my child of 2 enter onsen? Private? She doesn't wear diapers any more.

Hi Sama-san,

No, I would not use a 21-day JR Pass. Much of your travel is just within Tokyo/Kyoto and a JR Pass would be better used for exploring different cities.

Looking around I could not really find a good match, as you stay quite long in Kyoto. As such buying normal tickets would be the best option.

I'm not (yet) a parent myself and would feel bad about giving that kind of advice. In general terms, I have noticed that Japanese parents try to keep their children quiet, as long as you try to make an effort and not let the child do whatever unsupervised, I think it is the best you can do. Your child can of course come into a private onsen, just like an adult, make sure she is well washed and scrubbed before entering.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Daniel-san hontoni arigatou gozaimusu!

How much will I be saving by not taking the 21 pass.
The thing about Kyoto is that I Will be traveling back and forth to Osaka and Nara and maybe some other places. Every evening I'll be returning to Kyoto to the hotel.

Hi Sama-san,

Usually, people ask us how much they will save using a JR Pass :)

You can use our JR Farecalculator to find out how much each leg costs and how it stacks up against the cost of a JR Pass :)

Kind regards,
Daniel
