I would appreciate your advice about whether we should purchase 14 day JR Rail Passes.

  • We arrive at Kansai airport, Osaka on 27 June.
  • We will stay 3 days in Osaka but plan to take a day trip to Nara on 29 June.
  • On 30 June we travel from Osaka to Koyasan and stay there one night.
  • From Koyosan we travel to Kyoto and stay there 3 nights.
  • On Wednesday 4 July we travel from Kyoto to Tokyo.
  • The following day we go to Hakone and spend 2 nights there.
  • We return to Tokyo from Hakone on 7 July.
  • On Monday morning, 9 July we travel from Tokyo to Nagoya where we stay one night.
  • On Tuesday 10 July we must travel from Nagoya back to Kansai airport in Osaka.

From what i have read it seems that we cannot use the JR Rail Pass to get to Koyosan from Osaka or to Hakone from Tokyo so i am unsure about whether we should purchase the rail pass.

Thank you for any help!

Betty

Hi there,

Firstly, as you have a 14 day trip planned (and are doing a fair amount of travel), I think you'll stand a good change of a 14 day rail pass being economical. As a 14 day pass is ¥45,100, the best way of understanding if it is worthwhile is to compare it to the equivalent real JR tickets that you'll have to buy. Here's a cost breakdown of your trip based on what you have listed:

  1. Kansai airport > Osaka: ¥2400, (53mins, 57km)
  2. Osaka > Nara: ¥780, (51mins, 48km)
  3. Nara > Osaka: ¥780, (55mins, 48km)
  4. Osaka > Kyoto: ¥540, (29mins, 42km)
  5. Kyoto > Tokyo: ¥13220, (161mins, 513km)
  6. Tokyo > Odawara: ¥3640, (35mins, 83km)
  7. Odawara > Tokyo: ¥1450, (36mins, 83km)
  8. Tokyo > Nagoya: ¥10580, (126mins, 366km)
  9. Nagoya > Kansai airport: ¥8270, (114mins, 247km)

TOTAL: ¥41660 for 9 legs

As you can see individual tickets will work out slightly cheaper than a 14 day rail pass. It's worth bearing in mind that if you want some flexibility to change plans and travel to other areas, or you envisage yourselves travelling in a day trip to other destinations such as Hiroshima or Nikko, you could opt for a 14 day pass for an extra ¥3440 over the standard ticket price and save a lot of money on these journeys.

Hope this helps!
