December/January itinerary help

We are arriving 29 December and look at doing following:
Arrive in Tokyo - fly or train to Hiroshima
3 nights Hiroshima - train to Kyoto (29 - 31/12)
4 nights Kyoto - train to Takayama (1/1 -4/1)
2 nights Takayama - train to Tokyo (5/1 -6/1)
5 nights Tokyo (maybe night in Hakone) (7/1-11/1)

Does this look like it will work? We thought we would head straight to Hiroshima to avoid catching trains until New Years day that should be quieter and then not until the 5/1 when it should be fine. Would this work and will we be able to get seats?
Also should we fly or try and train to Hiroshima?.
Should we buy a JR Pass?

Thanks

Hi there,

It will depend what time you arrive in Tokyo, it is quite far to Hiroshima and there is usually no transport available after midnight. For travel to Hiroshima, flying will be faster but using the JR Pass will be a lot more economic. You'd also not have to worry in case your earlier flight has a delay.

You should be fine getting seats after the New Years weekend

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks for that. I was now thinking instead of flying direct to Osaka, instead of into Tokyo, on 29/12 and staying in Kyoto and then taking the train on the 3rd or 4th January to Hiroshima. Will it be difficult getting seats in the train to Hiroshima given people may be going back home at the end of the holiday?

Thanks
Robyn

Hi Robyn,

I would advise to reserve the seats in the first couple of days when you arrive in Japan. This way you'll be secure of seats and will not have to worry about securing your seats.

Kind regards,
Daniel
