Considering 7day JR pass

Hello,
I am traveling to Japan in mid April and considering purchasing a JR pass. Based on my itinerary below, could you tell me if a 7-day pass would be worthwhile? I am thinking I would have it start on Day 2 when I travel from Tokyo to Kyoto. I have also read that the Nozomi train is not covered by the JR pass so I am not sure if there is a JR pass train that could be taken from Koyasan to Takayama. Would a different pass better suit my needs?

Day 1: Narita to Tokyo
Day 2-5: Kyoto (+ day trip to Osaka)
Day 6: Koyasan
Day 7-8: Takayama (+ day trip to Shirakawa)
Day 9: Tokyo

Thank you!
Catharine

Hello Catharine,

I recommend a 7 day JR Pass from day 2 to day 8, if you can return to Tokyo by the last day of usage.

The Nozomi Shinkansen is not included but you can use the Hikari Shinkansen instead. These are the exact same train but the Hikari stop at a couple more stations on the route.

For Koya-san, part of the route is traveled on the Nankai express, which is not included in the JR Pass. The easiest way to connect to the Nankai is at Shin-Imamiya station in Osaka. You can use the JR Pass all the way to Shin-Imamiya and transfer there. The same applies going to Takayama, return to Shinimamiya and from there you can use the JR Pass Takayama.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
