Dear JR Pass advisor,

I'm planning to travel for 2 weeks to Japan, what do you think of this itinerary?

F 28: 13.05h Madrid Barajas
S 29: 9.25h Narita Tokio
S 30: Tokyo
M 1: Tokyo
T 2:Tokyo
W 3: Tokyo - Fuji
T 4: Fuji - Japanese Alps
F 5: Japanese Alps - Kanazawa
S 6: Kanazawa - Kyoto
S 7: Kyoto, day trip Nara
M 8: Kyoto - Osaka
T 9: Osaka, Himeji castle
W 10: Osaka - Hiroshima and Miyajima
T 11: Hiroshima and Miyajima
F 12: Hiroshima y Miyajima - Tokyo
S 13: 11.25h Tokyo - Narita - 18.40h Madrid Barajas

  • Are we visiting too many places? Should we stay more or less time in any place?
  • Have all these places a Shinkansen station?
  • And the most important thing is we would like to buy the 7 days JR pass. How can we schedule it? maybe buying extra tickets for some trips?
  • How important are the JR Pass timetables to create our itinerary? We've heard we have to take into consideration the train timetables.

Many thanks in advance!

Kind regards,
Mireia

Hi Mireia,

1.) Overall your plans look feasible but there's two items I'd like at. I.) Japanese Alps, this is quite a large area and transport can be complicated. I recommend planning this part in more detail. II.) I would spend a bit more time in Kyoto. Usually I'd recommend 3 days there at minimum. Consider dropping Nara, in a way it is very much like Kyoto. This way you spend less time travelling and more time sightseeing :)

2.) Nearly all cities do. Only Nara does not.

3.) I would opt for a 14 day JR Pass, with all the travel you do. This is by far the better option.

4.) Trains in the Shinkansen and between big cities are frequent and depart often. On the Shinkansen for instance, you'll have a train at least every 30 minutes that covered by the JR Pass. You should take travel time in mind but don't worry too much about what exact to get on.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
