Advice for Kyoto–Kanazawa–Shirakawago–Takayama–Tokyo

Hi,
My husband and I are planning to visit the above area in November 2018 to see your beautiful country in the autumn season. We will fly into Osaka and start from Kyoto and fly out of Tokyo as I read that Autumn colours are better in late November in Tokyo. Tentative plan is as follow:

Day 1: Osaka
Day 2-6: Kyoto (5 nights)
Day 7-8: Kanazawa (2 nights)
Day 9: Shirakawago
Day 10:: Takayama
Day11: Tokyo
Day 12: Hakone
Day 13: Kawaguchiko
Day 14-15: Toyko (2 nights)
Day 16: Fly out of Tokyo

Questions:
1) We are flexible with schedule and would appreciate advice for best route
2) Would the 7 Day JR pass be good value if we activate it on Day 7 when we leave Kyoto for Kanazawa (ending on Day 13 when we will be in Kawaguchiko) ? Should we adjust the days we visit Hakone and Kawaguchiko to maximise use of JR pass and buy Hakone Free pass?
3) Is it a good idea to use the luggage forward service when we leave Kyoto and get our luggage delivered ahead to Tokyo? This will mean we will need small hand carriers for 4 nights in Kanazawa, Shirakawago and Takayama. Would this make sense?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Cherie

Hi Cherie,

1.) I think the route looks good, as it stands now, I don't think anything needs to be changed.

2.) Right now it would be cheaper to buy normal JR tickets. A Hakone Free Pass can be good.

3.) I think so, not having to carry the suitcases around will make your trip more convenient. There is space on the bus to Shirakawa-go and coin lockers there so you could bring them, it's just not as convenient.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks so much for your reply. Can I clarify whether point 2 means the 7 day JR pass is not worth for me and I should buy JR tickets for Kyoto to Kanazawa and from Takayama to Tokyo? What if I adjust to stay in Tokyo on Day 12 (move Hakone and Kawaguchiko to Day 13 & 14) and use the JR while in Tokyo?

Thanks,
Cherie
