Since we have 5 days in Shimoda I am wondering the best value approach to the JR pass, we are a family of 4 (kids are 16 & 14). Our (rough) itinerary is below - it would also be very helpful to understand if anything isn't covered by the pass;

Arrive 4 August into Tokyo Narita - stay in Tokyo 2 nights
6 August - Train to Hakone - stay in Hakone 1 night
7 August - Train to Shimoda - stay in Shimoda stay 5 nights
12 August - Train to Kyoto - stay in Kyoto 4 nights
16 August - Train to Hiroshima - stay 1 night
17 August - Train to Alps, possibly Kanazawa? Still working out best way to see Alpine area
19 August - Train to Tokyo - flight out from Narita 20 August

Thanks!

Hi there,

Parts that are not covered are travel on the Izukyu line between Ito station and Shimoda Station. As well as local travel within Hakone.

All your intercity travel is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and you will make very good savings on the route to Kyoto, Hiroshima and Kanazawa.

For the Japanese Alps, I would either visit Kanazawa, Takayama or Matsumoto. All are cities worthwhile visiting and make good day trips into the Alps.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
