Hello,
I am looking for feedback on my itinary. We are landing on March 31st and leaving on April 14th, so 15 days in Japan. I'm hoping to find out when we should start our JR Pass (at the airport or on day 2). How much would the train be from the Narita Airport to downtown Tokyo without a JR pass?

Day 1 – Get to Tokyo in PM
Day 2 – Tokyo
Day 3 – Day trip to Nikko, sleep in Tokyo
Day 4 – Tokyo
Day 5 – Travel to Hakone
Day 6 – Travel to Nagano (snow monkeys?)
Day 7 – Travel to Takayama
Day 8 – Day trip to Shirakawago. Back to Takayama to sleep
Day 9 – Travel to Kanazawa
Day 10 – Travel to Kyoto
Day 11 – Kyoto
Day 13- Day trip to Nara
Day 12 – Kyoto
Day 13 – Travel to Osaka
Day 14 – Osaka
Day 15 – Train back to Tokyo to catch plane home

Thank you for your help.

Hi there,

Getting into Tokyo from Narita Airport costs around 1,000yen using a bus. 1,200-1,500yen by local train and about 3.000yen using the Narita Express.

After that I would indeed recommend using a 14 day JR Pass. The trip to Jigokudani for the snow monkey park involves quite a bit of travel. Be sure to leave early and plan ahead of time. The best time to see the monkies is around 10-11 am.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Have a good trip!
Daniel
