Hi,
We’re going to be in Japan for 19 days. I’m finding it s not difficult to work out what is covered by the pass and what isn’t. Our itinerary is:

Day 1: Narita Airport to Shinjuku station

Day 5: train to Matsumoto and then onwards to Takayama (train and bus: I know bus isn’t covered by JR)

Day 8: Takayama to Kyoto

Days 10 and 11: day trips to Nara and Osaka

Day 13: Kyoto to Koyasan (I know part of this isn’t covered by the JR Pass)

Day 14: Koyasan to Tanabe (ditto)

Day 17: Tanabe to Yokohama

Day 18: Yokohama to Tokyo

Day 19: Tokyo to Narita Airport

Looking at this, I think everything else is covered by the JR. But could you let me know if I’m wrong? Thanks!

Julie

Hi there,

You can travel between all the cities you want to visit, as you know travel to/from Koya-san is not fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

From Matsumoto - Takayama, you can use the JR Pass fully on this route using the train. Only downside is that it takes longer than the bus. It's quite a nice route to travel though, first take a ltd. express train from Matsumoto to Nagoya, then the Hida Wide View express to Takayama.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
