13 days Tokyo to Hiroshima and back - Nozomi/Mizuho? Schedule?

I am confused about the routes/trains/times for my itinerary if I want to get the best use or route out of my JR pass. If I use Google map to plan, I always get either the Mizuho or Nozomi Shinkansen. But I keep reading that the JR pass does not cover these fastest trains. But other posts seem to indicate I should buy the JR Pass for the best value and times for these cities/intinerary. Can you please tell me if, 1) the JR pass is in fact what I should get and, 2) where can I plug in my routes to get to the right station, on the right train and at the right time.

Day 1 - Narita to Tokyo
Day 2 - Tokyo
Day 3 - Tokyo to Hiroshima
Day 3 - Hiroshima to Miyajima
Day 4 - Hiroshima
Day 5 - Hiroshima to Himeji
Day 5 - Himeji to Osaka
Day 6 - Osaka to Kyoto
Day 7 - Kyoto
Day 8 - Kyoto to Aomori
Day 9 - Aomori
Day 10 - Aomori to Sapporo
Day 11 - Sapporo
Day 12 - Sapporo to Tokyo
Day 13 - Tokyo to Narita

Thank you for your advice and any helpful links.

Hi there,

Unfortunately Google maps is not a very good resource for planning with the Japan Rail Pass. This is because it does not show the Hikari, Sakura and other services covered by the JR Pass.

For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included. I can be a bit of work but will be a great help once you understand it. Keep the Nozomi/Mizuho/Hayabusa option on when you go north of Tokyo, as the Hayabusa Shinkansen is included in the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you so much Daniel. Two more questions:

1) I tried the Hyperdia but it says route not found no matter what stations I put in. Can you give me an example from my itinerary of what info to enter in so I can have at least one success to try and copy please?

2) I can't remember where I saw it, but just yesterday I thought I saw Hayabusa Shinkansen added to a list with Nozomi and Mizuno as no JR pass trains. Since it wasn't on an earlier list, I thought maybe they didn't have it at first while it was still being introduced. Can you please verify that if we get to the Hayabusa line we can travel on that one with the pass up to Hokkaido?

I really appreciate the time you've taken.

with aloha,
René

Also, on the interactive map. all the pdf schedules below are all valid within the JR Pass? So I just breakdown our trips area by area?

Thanks again!

Yeah, I did get the Hyperdia to work now. Perhaps a glitch yesterday.

So I just need help with other two questions :

2) Hayabusa Shinkansen
3) Interactive map pdf's

René

Hi René,

2.) The Hayabusa Shinkansen are included.

3.) All the PDF's with JR lines are covered. We also have PDF's for the Tokyo Metro, the metro is not included, the map is provided for reference.

Mahalo,
Daniel
