Hello

I'm planning on spending August in Japan. Could someone please look over my itinerary, provide any suggestions and let me know if I should get a JR pass. If so, which JR pass should I get and when should I use it?

My trip:

  • Osaka (3 nights)
  • Day trip to Nara
  • Kyoto (3 nights)
  • Hiroshima (2 nights)
  • Day trip to Miyajima Island
  • Akiyoshisai (1 night)
  • Day trip to Okunoshima
  • Nagano (2 nights, trip to the Snow Monkey Park)
  • Tokyo (3 nights) - I'll be doing a day trip to Yokohama on the 3rd day and a day trip to Nikko on the 2nd day)
  • Hakone/Kawaguchiko (2 nights)
  • Tokyo (2 nights)
  • Hanawa, Akita (2 nights - potential day trip to Kakunodate on the 2nd day)
  • Tokyo (6 nights - 1 night at Mt Fuji, 1 day around Kamakura)

All up I'm spending 14 days in Tokyo with 6-7 day trips (Nikko, Yokohama, Hakone, Kawaguchiko, Mt Fuji, Kamakura).

The reason why I'm planning on leaving Tokyo to go to Akita is to go to the Hanawa Bayashi Festival.

Hi there,

The festival in Akita is really nice and likely the best reason to visit. With such a trip in mind, I recommend using a 14 day JR Pass and start using it when you travel to Hiroshima and from there on. This way you can make really good savings make good use of the Japan Rail Pass.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for responding!

I'm glad I'll be around during the festival in Akita. It looks like a great celebration.

Just to check, are you saying that I should get a 14 day JR Pass and activate it on day 8 (when I'm travelling from Kyoto to Hiroshima)? That would mean the pass would expire the day before I go to Akita.

In case my post wasn't clear, my trip is currently:
1. Osaka
2. Osaka
3. Osaka

14. Yokohama (day trip)

Hi again,

I think the different mentions of staying a night or day here and there threw me off.

Reviewing it now would use a 21 day JR Pass. You would still make good use of one.

Kind regards,
Daniel
