I will be in Tokyo from 24-31 March. Travelling from Tokyo to lake Kawaguchiko from 31 March to 1 April. Then travelling to Kyoto from 1 April to 4 April. Going from Kyoto to Osaka on the 4 April to 7 April. Will the JR pass be a good purchase or should I pay as I travel? Would appreciate your advice.

Hi there,

I would recommend a JR Pass if you travel back from Osaka to Tokyo as well. Otherwise it would be better to buy normal tickets. A 7 day JR Pass is generally cost effective if used to cover a return Tokyo Kyoto/Osaka.

Let me know if I can help with anything!

Thank you very much Daniel-san! I have a few more questions and would appreciate your expert advise.

1) As I will be in Tokyo for a week, visiting Disneyland and travelling mainly within Tokyo city, and maybe if time permits I would like to visit Nikko as a day trip. What are my options in transportation (best price)?

2) While in Kyoto, 1 April to 4 April, I will be visiting Southern and Northern Higashiyama, Arashiyama and Sagano. Again if time permits I would like to visit Nara (maybe on my way to Osaka). Which transportation ticket should I get?

I feel like there is so much I want to see and not enough time.....

I will be flying off from Osaka.

Hi again,

1.) Within Tokyo, look at using a Tokyo Metro day pass. These offer good value if you use the metro at least 4 times per day. For Nikko, look at the Tobu Nikko pass. This is the best value ticket (outside of the JR Pass).

2.) You can use the JR Pass to Nara and Arashiayama. In general, I recommend using a 500yen bus ticket in Kyoto. This offers unlimited travel for one day. A normal bus ride is 230yen/per ride, so you easily get the value.

Trust me, after 10 years of visiting Japan, I've still not seen most of what I'd like :)

Hope this helps,
Daniel
