Hi! My family and I will be visiting Japan for the first time this coming December and we just want to know if buying a JR Rail Pass will be worth our money, because it’s expensive, or buying individual train tickets would be the better choice?

Dec 25-30 - Tokyo
Dec 31 - Osaka
Jan 1 - Kyoto (Day Trip)
Jan 2 - Nara (Day Trip)
Jan 3 - Hiroshima/Miyajima
Jan 4 - Explore Osaka
Jan 5 - Fly out of Japan

Hi there,

Yes, a 7 day JR Pass would be well worth it. Consider the following ticket prices:

Tokyo - Osaka: 14.500yen
Osaka - Hiroshima 10.500yen
Hiroshima - Osaka 10.500yen.

For a total of 35,500yen, while the 7 day JR Pass is only 29,100yen. Add to this the trips to Kyoto, Nara, Miyajima and possible local travel. All in all, you'll get a great deal with the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you so much! I would just like to ask, does the JR Rail pass cover any transportation going to Odaiba? Like the rail or the ferry?? Or do we have to buy a separate ticket for that on top of the metro? :-)
