I'd appreciate any advice...
My partner and I will be going to Hiroshima for 5-7 days in March. While there, we will need to go on a daytrip to Kumamoto. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the following (I've found it difficult to find the answers online):
i) How long the journey takes approximately (quickest time possible)?
ii) The approximate return cost? I can only ever see single journey costs.
iii) Is there any way to save money by purchasing in advance?

Hello Neil,
1.) Here is a full example route. The fastest route is with the Sakura Shinkansen, taking a little less than 2 hours.
2.) Return cost is simple double the cost of a one way ticket.
3.) Sometimes you can if you use the JR website Eki Net, this is however only in Japanese.
