Getting around only with JR pass

When reading around the internet about the JR Pass, i understand it reaches everywhere i need to go, but it limits me to only some of the trains. (e.g.: I can't ride the Nozomi train with the standard JR pass)

How can i find out how much time it takes to travel from one city to another using only trains i can ride with the valid JR ?

Some of the journeys that i would like to know their times are :
Tokyo -> Osaka
Tokyo -> Nikko
Osaka -> Kyoto
Osaka -> Hiroshima
Hiroshima -> Fukuoka
Fukuoka -> Beppu
Osaka -> Takayama
Osaka -> Koyasan
Osaka -> Tokyo
(All these journeys are in my itinerary, and i want to know if i'll logically be able to make all these rides within the time i have in japan)

Thanks, Gilly.

Hi Gilly,

Yes - you cannot use the JR Pass on Nozomi class bullets, but equivalent Hikari class bullets run on the same lines so you will be able to access the entire JR network.

I've done a set of searches for you that are valid for the JR Pass to put you on the right track (hoho....):

  1. Tokyo > Nikko: ¥5630, (121mins, 150km)
  2. Nikko > Tokyo: ¥5630, (117mins, 150km)
  3. Tokyo > Osaka: ¥13950, (194mins, 556km)
  4. Osaka > Kyoto: ¥540, (29mins, 42km)
  5. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540, (28mins, 42km)
  6. Osaka > Takayama: ¥10610, (223mins, 357km)
  7. Takayama > Osaka: ¥10610, (220mins, 357km)
  8. Osaka > Koyasan: ¥1400, (141mins, 73km, incl. non-JR parts)
  9. Koyasan > Osaka: ¥1400, (122mins, 73km, incl. non-JR parts)
  10. Osaka > Tokyo: ¥13950, (194mins, 556km)
  11. Osaka > Hiroshima: ¥10150, (104mins, 345km)
  12. Hiroshima > Hakata: ¥8900, (69mins, 280km)
  13. Hakata > Beppu: ¥7530, (104mins, 188km)
  14. Beppu > Tokyo: ¥24150, (441mins, 1228km)

Please note these legs are not in sequence (eg. the trip back to Tokyo from Osaka at step 10 doesn't make much sense over the whole list). Also, please note that the Bullet train station in Fukuoka is called 'Hakata'.

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog. Hyperdia has all the information you need to plan further including exact trip durations for all your point to point legs.

Hope this helps!
