I will be travelling from Narita Airport to Shin-Kobe on 5 April and returning on 18 April with stops in Tokyo in both directions. Is there a rail pass available for this route (and these times) that would save me some money?
The only pass that will cover that journey end-to-end will be the nationwide Japan Rail Pass, however as you will be needing to travel over a long period of 14 days I'm not sure that a rail pass will be the best option for you over jsut purchasing tickets as needed. Here is the cost breakdown for you of the JR ticket cost for comparison:
- Narita airport terminal 1 > Tokyo: ¥3,140 (62mins, 79km)
- Tokyo > Shin-kobe: ¥14,470 (195mins, 589km)
- Shin-kobe > Tokyo: ¥14,470 (195mins, 589km)
- Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥3,140 (58mins, 79km)
JR ticket cost: ¥35,220 for 4 legs
- 7 day Japan Rail Pass (¥28,300) saving: ¥6,920
As you can see you'll make a saving if you can do it in a 7 day trip, but if you need all 14 days covered, then you'll need to spend a futher ¥9880 on JR tickets before you reach the ¥45,100 cost of the 14 day pass.
In this case, if you need the 14 days and are doing no further travel, I recommend purchasing JR tickets on arrival over the rail pass.
I hope this helps!
Thanks very much for this information. It was very helpful. May I ask one more small question? Can you tell me or is there a quick way to check via the web as to what the additional cost of the "green car" would be for the Tokyo-Shin-Kobe Shinkansen portions of the trip?
No problem :)
For that route, the standard single fare is ¥14,870 vs the green car fare of ¥19,310, making an additional cost for green car of ¥4440.
I hope this helps!
Thanks again -- this information was also very helpful! Lou
No problem - Have a great trip! :)
