15 Days in Japan - JR pass worth it?

My partner and I will be travelling in japan this April for roughly 15 days. Just wanted help with our itinerary and to see if getting a JR pass is worth it.

Tokyo -

Day 1: Arrive 7PM at Narita Airport , staying in Shinjuku for 6 nights
Day 2: Disney Sea
Day 3: West Tokyo
Day 4: Nikko Day trip
Day 5: Northern Tokyo
Day 6: Central Tokyo or Odaiba

Day 7: Tokyo to Hakone - Stay at ryokan for 1 night

Day 8: Travel Hakone to Kyoto, stay Kyoto for 6 nights - Arashiyama
Day 9: Universal Studios
Day 10: Osaka Day trip
Day 11: Nara Day trip
Day 12: Eastern Kyoto
Day 13: Hiroshima Day trip

Day 14: Kyoto to Tokyo - Last day shopping
Day 15: Depart from Narita Airport

We were thinking of getting the 14 day JR pass and activate it 1 day after arrival. Or should we just get 7 day pass and activate it before we go to Kyoto, since travel in Tokyo is quite cheap.

Our accommodation has all been booked. Please give us any tips and suggestions.

Thanks =D !

Hi there,

You do more than enough travel to make a 14 day JR Pass pay off and cover travel between all the cities you wish to go to. You may still need local transport in Hakone or in some cities but this will be very minor in cost compared to the rest of your itinerary.

A 7 day JR Pass would not be very good as the period Day 7 - 14 is counted as 8 days (day 7 is day 1). So you'd miss the return to Tokyo.

Overall, I think your itinerary looks really nice. You've included many great places and I especially like the additions of Nikko and Hiroshima. These really add that extra variety of what Japan has to offere.

Enjoy your trip!
