About the Rapid Mie train service

The Rapid Mie train is one of the few options to access the prefecture of Mie, famous for the city of Toba, Ise Jingu temple, Ise Shima national park and of course, Mie itself. Here’s what you need to know about the Rapid Mie express train, how to make reservations, (extra) fares, and how to use the JR Pass on the train.

Stations and stops

The Rapid Mie train service travels on the JR Kisei line between Nagoya ↔ Toba stations, and is operated by JR Central. The service is a rapid service, and only stops at the larger stations on the route, however the Rapid Mie is considered a local train when buying tickets and only the base fare is applicable. Making the train a fast and low-cost option.

The train stops at the following stations:

  • Nagoya: Terminus station, connecting to the Shinkansen, conventional network, and Nagoya Metro.
  • Kuwana
  • Yokkaichi
  • Suzuka
  • Tsu
  • Matsusaka
  • Taki (Mie)
  • Iseshi: Stop for the town of Ise and Ise Jingu temple
  • Futaminoura
  • Toba: Terminus station and stop for the city of Toba.

Seat reservations for the rapid Mie

The train operates a 3 carriage layout, but only half a car have reserved seats. The train can get busy at times, and we recommend getting a seat reservation ahead of time to secure seating. This can be done at any JR Station, reserving a seat will cost around 500yen, but is complementary with the Japan Rail Pass.

Train frequency

Trains depart in each direction about 9 during low season and 11 times during high season, at one hour frequencies. Note that service is generally between 9 and 5. Outside these hours, local trains can be used on the same route, but they can significantly longer. It is therefor recommended to check timetables beforehand and plan accordingly.

Using the Japan Rail Pass on the Rapid Mie Train

The Japan Rail Pass is valid on the Rapid Mie train, and as mentioned above, seat reservations can be made for free. There’s one catch though, as between Kawarada Station and Tsu Station the train travels on private railways operated by the Ise Railway. For this part, a 540yen extra fare is required, which is not included in the pass. The fare is collected on board by the conductor, but can also be paid ahead of time at the ticket office.

Travel tips

The entrance to Ise Jingu, no pictures are allowed beyond this point. You'll have to visit yourself to know more.

  • Ise Jingu is a must-visit for any Japanese during their lifetime and holds special significance during the later years in life. While nearly everyone in Japan will know this temple, it remains off the radar from foreign visitors.
  • As mentioned two times already, book your seats in advance. We suggest doing so 2-3 days in advance as there are very few reserved seats and they are free with the JR Pass.
  • If you make your way down to Toba, then be sure to visit the local aquarium its one of the best in the world.
