To use the JR Pass, you'll need to activate the exchange order first, which we will ship directly to you. This can be done at a JR travel desk, located in most JR Operated stations. If you plan to be using it 5 days after you arrive, you can set the activation date for the specific day you want to start using it on.

To use the JR Pass, you'll have to make seat reservations at one of these desks before you board the train. This can be done as soon as you exchange your pass, or later.

In terms of purchasing it, because your trip is in less than three months it doesn't really make a difference when you purchase it, as long as you account for delivery time to wherever you're located. More info on this can be found here.
