Hi there- I am trying to figure out if the rail pass is worthwhile for my mom and I to purchase for upcoming trip in 3 weeks and some logistics

We are flying into Haneda Airport and want to go get on the train to Kyoto the same morning. Is there a station right from that airport? If not where is the best place to transfer to?
We will spend 2 days in Kyoto then go back to Tokyo for another 4 days and fly out of Narita Airport, which does have a train to it that would be covered by the pass, correct?

So with that schedule is it cost effective to buy the 7 day pass? And if we do get the pass is it worthwhile to get the green first class seats?

Thank you for the help!

Hi there,

The 7 day JR Pass would be a great option here. A normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto alone is almost the price of the 7 day JR Pass. Which also covers travel from Haneda Airport (using the Tokyo Monorail) and to Narita Airport, additionally you can use the JR Pass for local JR services in Tokyo.

To get from Haneda Airport - Kyoto. Take the Tokyo Monorail from Haneda Airport - Hamamatsucho (the last stop) there transfer to the JR Yamanote line to Tokyo station (only a 6min ride) at Tokyo take the Shinkansen (bullet train) directly to Kyoto.

For this itinerary I think that you'll be more than good in Ordinary class.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks for the info! Do the bullet trains run at all hours? Specifically I am thinking we may want to take a very early morning train (like 4AM) back to Tokyo.

As a general rule, trains in Japan start service around 6 a.m. and stop service at midnight to resume the next morning. (be sure to keep this in mind when planning)
