Hello,

I'm going backwards and forwards about buying a JR rail pass. I will also buy a Suica & Nex card to travel between Narita and Tokyo because of the duration of our stay (9 days). I have been checking and calculating and recalculating between options until I'm at a point where I'm a bit lost. Here's my itinerary:

Day 1: Tokyo
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Hakone (at my father's request, we will ride the Romance Car with a Hakone pass for the cruise and the cable car, etc.)
Day 4: Hakone
Day 5: Kyoto: Shinkansen from Odawara
Day 6: Kyoto
Day 7: Kyoto (maybe a day trip to Nara)
Day 8: Tokyo (Shinkansen from Kyoto)
Day 9: Home (to Narita Airport)

I can use my Suica & Nex card for travelling in Tokyo and to/from Narita.

From my latest calculations (if I did it right), with the day trip to Nara, the sum is less than 27,000 Yen, which is less than the JR Rail Pass. But I'm thinking that I might have missed something.

I will really appreciate your input on this one. This is my first time in Japan and, I must say, I'm already exhausted.

Best regards,

Nawee

Hi Nawee,

It's good to see that you are seriously looking at available options.

I've made a small list of ticket prices for you:

Odawara (Hakone) - Kyoto ¥ 11,750
Kyoto - Nara (return) ¥ 1,380
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 13,220
Tokyo - Narita Airport (with the Narita Express) ¥ 2,940

For a total of ¥ 29,290 the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300 so you would save ¥ 990. In addition you can use the JR Pass on the local JR Network in Tokyo adding more to your savings. In addition you can also consider buying the JR Pass for the flexibility convenience it offers in that you can take any train for 7 days and don't have to worry about buying tickets every time.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hello,

Thank you, Daniel, for your price breakdowns.

I'm just wondering though. Since I will buy a return Suica-Nex package. I can use it on the trip from Tokyo to Narita Airport, right? So the total would be Y 26,350. I can use the difference on the routes that are not covered by the JR pass. Am I right or am I wrong?

Best regards,

Nawee

Hi I know how this can be so frustrating.
But having jr pass is so easy at the stations. For bullet train trips, reserve seats upfront at the JR office; for local trips just show the pass and hop on the train. It's that easy. All around Tokyo and Nara.

Suica pkg is a great idea but use it for the first day going to Tokyo and use the jr pass from day3, right?
Since romance car is Odakyu, if u use JR u can use the jr pass.

Have fun!!!

Hi Nawee,

Did you know that you can also buy the [Suica + Nex] package for one way which is 3,500yen (5,500yen for a return)? This would save you 2,000 yen if you use the JR Pass on the way back to Narita coming down to 28,350 yen in total. At this point any additional travel you may do is what you would save. This could for instance be on the local JR Network in Tokyo.

Best regards,
Daniel
