itinerary v's financial advantage?

Hyperdia is generally correct, although it can take a bit of time to get used to. I checked your itinerary to see what the best option would be for your itinerary and from what I see is that buying normal tickets would be the best option for your itinerary. A 7 day JR Pass would work well if you make the return Tokyo - Osaka within 7 days but you would have to do more travel for either a 14 or 21 day JR Pass to help you make savings. However I do see that you have a good amount of time to spend in Kyoto/Osako, so you could consider making a day trip or two from there. For instance to Hiroshima, Himeji or Kinosaki-Onsen.

Thankyou Daniel, I realized I made a mistake, we are not flying out from Narita, we are flying out of Kansai Airport.

We will be making day trips out, but haven't locked in which locations yet.

I will check the prices of day trips we might make to see if it is worth it :)
