Transport between Osaka - Kyoto - Tokyo

I would certainly recommend a 7 day JR Pass For your return trip Osaka - Tokyo. The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Osaka, only now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price. You can for instance use it to travel around Tokyo, making for some nice savings.

For your travel around Osaka consider buying an ICOCA card to make local travel as convenient as possible. An ICOCA card basically is a prepaid travel card that you can swipe over the gate each time that you enter the platform making the need to buy tickets every time obsolete.

Lastly, the JR Pass is valid for 7 consecutive days and the first day is counted as a full day. You can use the JR Pass until the end of Sunday, when you activate it on the Monday before.

Thanks for the reply. Do we buy the ICOCA card when we arrive in Japan or will we have to get them before hand like the JR pass. What trains can we get on with the ICOCA cards? and how long will the ride be from Osaka to Kyoto?

Hi,

You can buy the ICOCA card at any JR station in Kansai, simply ask for it. The card comes with 1,500yen balance but you can charge it at any time. Travel time from Osaka to Kyoto station takes 29 minutes, do note that Osaka is pretty huge and you may need to add up to an additional 30 minutes to get to Osaka station, depending on where your accommodation is.
