Hi,
I m travellling to Tokyo with my husband & 2 kids on 29/11. Could you let me know whether a 7days JR pass would allow us to travel to all these destinations including the day trips? JR pass more worthy or...?
I have listed the following as my itinerary.

29/11-- arriving Narita Airport around 1600hrs ( any direct train from Narita Airport to Shinjuku, coz staying in Shinjuku ?)
29/11-1/12 -- visiting Tokyo
1/12-5/12-- from Shinjuku to Kyoto (is there any direct bullet train from Shinjuku to Kyoto, or i need to take from Tokyo station to Kyoto? During my stay in kyoto, i plan a day trip to either Nara or Kobe, what train should we take?any good place recommended?)
5/12-- Kyoto back to Shinkuju
8/12-- Shinjuku to Narita Airport

We hope can get your best advice for our journey.

Thanks,
Mndh

Hello Mndh,

I recommend using a 7 day JR Pass for your itinerary, given that you would at least cover travel from Shinjuku, Tokyo to Kyoto and back. The JR pass as about the same as a normal return ticket for this route, now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price.

As for routing:
Narita Airport - Shinjuku: You can use the Narita Express from the Airport to Shinjuku station.

Shinjuku - Kyoto, take a local train to Shinagawa or Tokyo station. From there the Shinkansen travels to Kyoto.

Kobe and Nara: there are direct local lines from Kyoto.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi again,
few more questions need your advise:-
1)means that we start using JR pass on my arrival, 29/11?
2)as mentioned above Kobe and Nara: direct local lines from Kyoto. this route is covered byJR pass?
3)Given that we will be in tokyo for a few days(5-8/12), should we buy a pass or prepaid card for other services such as subway?

Hi again!

1.) Yes you could start using it right away or start it when you travel to Kyoto. Both work.

2.) Yes!

3.) Either is fine here too. It depends on how much you plan on traveling around. Generally if you plan to travel more than 4 times by the Metro per day, then it makes sense to buy a Metro day pass, this costs around 750yen. Otherwise a prepaid travel card is the better option.
