We just wanted to check our itinerary and the pass we need to buy? We are planning to go to these places;
Tokyo (departure 24th August)
Takayama
Kyoto
Fukuoka
Kagoshima
Tokyo (arrival 2nd Sept)
Is it better to buy a 14 day rail pass? If so, which zones do we need to buy? JR Central, West etc.

Welcome to the forum. Before we go into detail, Kagoshima is great and while its a long trip to make from Tokyo, I definitely recommend it.
Given the distance and places you plan to travel, I would certainly get a 14 day JR Pass.
