Should we get a JR pass?

You do have a lot of train travel planned from May 6th and onward. In the old days, I would have recommended a 21-day JR Pass but now that may not make sense in terms of savings.

Instead, I think the best option is to use normal tickets until you arrive in Kyoto, then use a Kansai - Hiroshima Area Pass for travel to Hiroshima, Kurashiki and Osaka. It also includes the ferry to Miyajima, should be be inclined to head that way.
