Resort Shirakami in October?

Aloha,

We are leaving Sapporo early (7am) on the 15th of October and need to be at NRT early afternoon (2pm) on the 16th. We are trying to find either a very nice scenic route and/or JR Pass interesting city for the 15th and an overnight to enjoy before heading to airport.

1) Does the Resort Shirakami run in October?

2) If so, how can I find out the days/times it is running on?

3) Are there other trains on the Gono line in October that are worth taking?

3) Do you have any other suggestions? Maybe that involve fall colors or historic small town?
