Yes, this sounds like a good and fun plan for a first-time visit to Japan. A 7-day JR Pass would help you make savings when used to travel to Kyoto, Nara and back to Narita Airport. You can also use the Shinkansen bullet trains to/from Kyoto.

In addition to a JR Pass, look at using a Suica card. This will get you nearly everywhere.
