Help on which Pass to buy

Hi,

My family is about to go to Japan for the first time. Our brief itinerary is,

1) land in Narita airport, go to Tokyo, and stay for five days. We plan to take one day trip to visit Mount Fuji.

2) take train from Tokyo to Kyoto, and stay for four days. We plan to take one day trip to visit Nara.

3) take train from Kyoto to Narita airport for our flight back home.

Is this a good plan? If so, which pass do we need? the 7-day national pass?

Hi there,

Yes, this sounds like a good and fun plan for a first-time visit to Japan. A 7-day JR Pass would help you make savings when used to travel to Kyoto, Nara and back to Narita Airport. You can also use the Shinkansen bullet trains to/from Kyoto.

Thank you so much for your kind reply! Beyond the 7-day passes, do we also need to buy the passes for local transportation in Tokyo and Kyoto? Which passes should we buy?

In addition to a JR Pass, look at using a Suica card. This will get you nearly everywhere.
