Hello,

I’m going to japan next year and i have only one question
What is better for me 7 days pass or 14?

8 april t/m 15 april Tokyo
15 april t/m 17 april Kyoto
17 april t/m 18 april osaka
18 april t/m 20 april Hiroshima
20 april t/m 21 april Osaka

21 april t/m 23 april Tokyo

While we are in Tokyo (first time 8-15 april) i want to visit:

Kamakura
Nikko
Mount Fuji
Yokohama

Is it better to take a 14 days pass? Can I use the JR pass to visit all the things I want?
Or is it cheaper to buy a 7 day pass (Tokyo - Kyoto – Osaka – Hiroshima – Tokyo)
And separately tickets for Nikko, Kamakura etc

If I take a 14 day pass and activate my pass on the 8th I can also use a train from Narita to Tokyo?

Thanks for your help!

Hi there!

Lets breakdown the cost of your legs, assuming you will visit Kawaguchiko for Mt-Fuji (you could also visit Hakone). For Kawaguchiko the JR Pass will take you as far as Otsuki. From here you'll need to take the non-JR Fujikyu train upto Kawaguchiko itself (¥1100 each way). Aside from that one extra charge, the JR Pass will let you get to all your planned destinations :). You will be able to use the JR Pass on the Narita Express into Tokyo so I will include that in your costs, and I have grouped Yokohama and Kamakura in the same day trip as they are close to each other:

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Tokyo: ¥3,140 (62mins, 79km)
  2. Tokyo > Kamakura: ¥2,100 (47mins, 51km)
  3. Kamakura > Yokohama: ¥330 (26mins, 22km)
  4. Yokohama > Tokyo: ¥450 (27mins, 28km)
  5. Tokyo > Nikko: ¥5,630 (121mins, 150km)
  6. Nikko > Tokyo: ¥5,630 (117mins, 150km)
  7. Tokyo > Otsuki: ¥2,860 (85mins, 87km)
  8. Otsuki > Tokyo: ¥2,860 (76mins, 87km)
  9. Tokyo > Kyoto: ¥13,420 (164mins, 513km)
  10. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540 (28mins, 42km)
  11. Osaka > Hiroshima: ¥10,150 (104mins, 345km)
  12. Hiroshima > Osaka: ¥10,820 (109mins, 345km)
  13. Osaka > Tokyo: ¥13,950 (194mins, 556km)

JR ticket cost: ¥71,880 for 13 legs

As you can see you'll make great savings with the 14 day pass. Your ticket costs for your Tokyo travel alone will come in at ¥23,000, which is much more than the price differential between 7 and 14 day passes of ¥16,800. So I can recommend the 14 day over the 7 day as you'll also gain significant flexibility for further JR trips also during the extra 7 days of coverage.

Hope this helps!

Hi Peters,

I think Mari cover is really well!

If you plan to spend your first couple of days in Tokyo itself you could opt for a [Keisei Skylines + 2day open Metro pass]this will cost 2.980 Yen, will cover your journey to Tokyo and give you two days of unlimited travel on the Tokyo Metro. In this case you can activate your pass on the 10th and still have enough time to do the Day trips. In addition your journey back to Narita Airport on the 23rd would also be covered (2740Yen without the pass by JR).

Just something you could consider :)
