Will I save time and money with a JR pass?

We are 2 adults and 2 kids (ages 6 and 7), will be in Tokyo for 7 days and Kyoto for 2 days. From Tokyo, we are going to Yokohama twice (for the day only) and DisneySea once, as well as back/forth one time to Kyoto.

1) How much will we save by using the JR pass?
2) Should we buy a regular JR pass or the Green/First Class pass?
3) Do we also use the JR pass for the Tokyo subway system?

Thanks.

Hello there,

1.) The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen trains. Now you get 7 days of unlimited travel and any additional travel you cover with it, basically is what you save. Think of travel to Yokohama, Disney Sea, local JR lines in Tokyo and travel to the airport.

2.) I would recommend using a normal JR Pass for this trip. Simply because the amount of travel is limited and there is no Green Class on local trains within Tokyo.

3.) The Tokyo metro is not included, you can however use local JR lines to reach most of Tokyo. This also includes the JR Yamanote loop line that stops at many of the major stations in Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you! Two more questions:

1) Is the JR pass valid for the train to Narita from Tokyo (and from Narita to Asakusa)?
2) Can I use a JR line from Asakusa to Yokohama?

Thanks again.

Hi again!

Asakusa does not have its own JR Station. To get there from Narita Airport, use the Narita Express to Ueno station, there transfer to the Tokyo Metro Ginza line to Asakusa. This also applies to travel to Yokohama, take the metro to Ueno and use the JR Yokohama line from there.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
